Musical Director (residential)

This is a paid summer position at a full-schedule, 501(c)(3) non-profit residential arts program!

Buck's Rock Camp is hiring a wide variety of Camp Counselors and support staff for its upcoming season in 2023. All staff arrive in late June, a week before campers, and reside on-site through late August. They spend these two months working with kids and teens ages 10-17, while immersed in a thriving community of nearly 500 artists of all ages and from all walks of life and enjoying access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for the furthering of their own art practice . "Revolutionary" and "life-changing" are some of the words that our alumni have used to describe this unique experience.

In particular, Buck's Rock is seeking a Musical DirectorThis person oversees all musical aspects of musical theater productions at Buck's Rock, typically 2 per summer. This person should expect to work most evenings between 6 PM and midnight, and later than that at least once per week, as rehearsals and performances often fall outside of primary shop hours, which occur every day from 9 AM to 6 PM. They are lodged on-camp, a short walking distance away from all amenities, in bunks with up to 3 other staff members. Their responsibilities and daily routines include...

  • Leading musical rehearsals with the cast of each musical, teaching the score and preparing the cast for performance
  • Leading rehearsals with the orchestra or band of each musical, preparing the orchestra or band for performance
  • Conducting the orchestra or band during dress rehearsals and performances
  • Working with the director, choreographer, sound designer, and other staff to ensure the needs of the cast, musicians, and show as a whole are met with regards to music and scoring
  •  Occasionally providing piano accompaniment during rehearsals, and playing in the orchestra or band as needed
  • Attending regular production meetings to coordinate with fellow performing arts staff
  • Attending dress and tech rehearsals, often between the hours of 6 PM - 10:30 PM, and communicating notes to actors
  • Scheduling and coordinating auditions to assess the rhythm, tone, voice, and general vocal skills of each musician
  • Providing vocal and instrumental demos
  • Collaborating with dozens of other instructional staff working in a variety of disciplines across Buck's Rock's 30+ shops, spanning both creative/visual and performing arts
  • Cultivating feelings of joy, belonging, and purpose in young creative minds!

Ideally, qualified applicants...

  • Have at least 3 years of experience in a professional theater environment
  • Have meaningful experience teaching their craft to teenage learners - or are hoping for more experience in that regard
  • Work well in collaboration with others, and can thrive in a busy communal living environment
  • Are comfortable spending long periods of time on foot and in the heat, as summers in the Housatonic Valley can be very hot and most camp facilities lack air-conditioning
  • Have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
