2023 Internship - Communications - Public Affairs
Do you have a passion for writing and media outreach?
Are you an organized fast paced individual who enjoys a variety of communications-oriented work?
If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team.
The Public Affairs intern will work alongside creative and technical professionals to help them craft effective written communications for internal and external audiences, and gain other experience such as interviewing, media monitoring, media pitching and web content set-up.
While a background in science, technology, engineering and math is not required, a love of communication in its varying forms is a must.
As a Public Affairs intern you will…
- Write communications for internal- and external-facing audiences, across a range of science and engineering topics
- Produce internal communications that cover everything from important staff information, personal stories and the discoveries and critical contributions of APL staff members to challenges facing the nation.
- Contribute to our internal, bi-weekly staff newsletter
- Follow and uphold editorial guidelines
- Work with other departments to ensure consistency in messaging to staff and external audiences.
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if the following applies to you:
- You are currently enrolled and majoring in a communications-related field (e.g., Public Affairs, Public Relations, Journalism, Mass Media Arts, Graphics Design).
- You have at least three examples of your work that you can share. Please include a link to your portfolio of work for review.
- You have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
- You have strong verbal communication skills with an ability to present ideas coherently and persuasively.
- You possess a strong attention to detail, organization and follow-through.
- You have the ability to work on deadline, set priorities, and work independently.
- Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you:
- Have recently contributed articles to a local/university/organization news publication (newspaper, newsletter, journal, blog, etc.)
- Possess familiarity with style guides, including the Associated Press Stylebook
