Job Title: Music Director
Reports to: Program Director, Camp Director
Position includes salary, plus room + board.
Position Purpose: To further the mission of the camp through the program design and implementation of music, drama and dance activities. To ensure that activities are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Assist in the management of the music shed, maintain related equipment and supplies.
Essential Job Functions:
1) Develop and deliver music programming that is appropriate for the age and ability of our unique camper population.
- Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
- Evaluate abilities of campers and adapt the programs as necessary.
- To make use of different mediums and available resources efficiently.
- Evaluate the success of completed music, drama and dance programs.
- Solicit counselor skills and ideas to supplement programs.
2) Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during music programing.
3) Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the music program area.
- Maintain any/all equipment pertinent to your program area.
- Ensure the security of all music equipment and supplies, including clear inventory and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner.
- Clean music area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.
4) Planning and facilitation of occasional evening programing
5) Assure that campers are properly supervised at all times.
6) Assisting with daily living skills of campers, including, but not limited to:
- Routinely lifting 50+ lbs. during transfers of campers
- Personal care: toileting, showering, dressing, brushing teeth, etc.
- Following any behavioral care plans
- Assisting with meal times to any degree of a campers’ needs.
7) Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities and motivate campers to participate in programs to their greatest ability.
8) Abide by all policies and procedures as outlined in the staff training manual.
9) Be alert to campers and fellow staff needs. Assist with health or personal problem and/or discuss with nursing staff, head counselors or camp director as necessary.
10) Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
11) Be able to instruct campers in emergency procedures and situations.
12) Other duties as assigned.
Other Job Duties:
- Weekly noon/night watch duties
- Assisting with special events
- Contributing to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
Relationships: Program Specialists often have direct relationships with the counseling staff and may actually serve as a counselor with a camper group when not on duty in their activity area. Program Specialists are also in communication with maintenance staff in regard facility needs.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age or high school graduate.
- Must be able to obtain or become First Aid/CPR certified (course offered during staff training).
- Must submit health history record prior to first day of work.
- Must be willing to live in camp setting and work irregular hours.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Training and experience in teaching music activities.
- Desire and ability to work with people with disabilities in varied conditions.
- Experience in leading groups of people in activity implementation.
- Have a sense of humor
- Organizational skills
- Aptitude for completing reports and paperwork
- Ability to communicate with others
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Be able to routinely (multiple times per day) lift and carry over 50 lbs.
- Enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures (weather, fire, etc.)
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.
- Ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid (illness or injury).
- Experience daily sun and heat exposure
Demands of the job may be such as to require you to assume duties not indicated that may be assigned by the Camp Director or person you are accountable to.
Some requirements of a Music Director will include endurance including prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking and stretching. The position requires hand-eye coordination.
