HHS Women's Health Communication Fellowship
HHS Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Office on Women’s Health (OWH), Office of The Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), Office of the Secretary (OS), in the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), located in Washington, DC.
The mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, by providing for effective health and human services and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services.
OWH provides expert advice and consultation to the Secretary on scientific, legal, ethical, and policy issues, and serves as a coordination point throughout HHS on issues affecting the health of women and girls. OWH establishes short and long-term goals within the Department for research, disease prevention and health promotion, service delivery, and education for public health and health care professionals surrounding women and girls’ health. OWH identifies needs and monitors activities within the Department that contribute to women and girls’ health and through leadership of the Coordinating Committee on Women’s Health. Additionally, OWH is responsible for facilitating the exchange of information through the National Women’s Health Information Center and promoting women and girls’ health programs and policies, all aimed at improving the health of women and girls.
This appointment is in OWH's Division of Strategic Communications (DSC). DSC communicates evidence-based women’s health information, for instance, through web content, press releases, blogs, social media, and speeches/interviews.
Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will be involved with planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating a strategic communications and outreach plan for OWH. The fellow will develop communication materials in a variety of formats, including plain language content for websites, communication reports to other teams and leadership within the office, and support health communication projects.
Learning Objectives: Specific learning opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Engage in strategic communications and outreach plan for OWH
- Plan and develop various communication science and marketing campaigns to disseminate information about the organizations programs
- Apply a variety of communication methods and techniques to market and promote activities through the use of all available digital/social media platforms
- Plan, organize, and manage communication activities, projects, and initiatives to disseminate information about OWH’s programs and public health communications
- Translate scientific content for public health communications
- Apply a variety of communication methods and techniques to market and promote activities using all available digital/social media platforms
- Design and produce a variety of materials in support of OWH communication activities, including but not limited to web content, internal communication, and PowerPoint presentations
- Use knowledge of health communication methodologies when assisting with the development of health communication strategies, content development, and media analysis
- Initiate and/or participate in evaluation efforts and studies to develop and implement public health communication products for a broad or at-risk audience
- Develop campaign materials including fact sheets, news releases, feature articles for magazines and trade papers, radio and television scripts, motion pictures, personal appearances, new conferences, exhibits, brochures, pamphlets, and other materials
- Evaluate campaigns for behavior change impact

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Early 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. Participants do not become employees of HHS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in public health, health communication, or health education. Most recent degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong communication and writing skills, Ability to train within a team
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to assist on a variety of topics and projects at the same time (which may include task tracking/management).
