External Affairs Specialist

The Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) is currently seeking applications for an External Affairs Specialist to assist with our externally facing activities and communications, with a particular emphasis on media outreach.

Responsibilities:


Reporting to CSET’s Director of External Affairs, you will take part in team efforts to highlight CSET’s work as it serves its dual mission of informing policymakers and preparing the next generation for policy-focused careers. This will involve a combination of internally and externally facing activities, including:

  • Devising strategies to gain positive media attention for the Center’s research, individual researchers, and public events;
  • Interacting on a regular basis with members of the media;
  • Managing and assisting with events, including a monthly seminar series, periodic report launches, and an annual conference;
  • Organizing and preparing CSET (print and electronic) materials for outreach to external stakeholders, including the U.S. Congress, the Executive Branch, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, the media and the general public;
  • Facilitating periodic website updates, including minor text revisions, sub-page creation, and website hygiene;
  • Crafting social media posts, press releases, and other external communications content to drive interest and engagement with newly-issued Center research publications; and
  • Participating in quality control of Center publications, which calls for considerable editing and writing skills.

Requirements: 


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, international relations, public policy or other relevant field;
  • 4 to 8 years of relevant work experience providing communications and/or project management support;
  • Exposure to policymaking staff (e.g. Congress, Department of State, Department of Defense);
  • Ability to carry out assigned tasks with limited need for supervision;
  • Proficiency with office productivity tools like Google Docs, Microsoft Office, etc.;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills.
     
Strong applicants may also have the following qualifications, but they are not required:

  • MA/MS or graduate coursework in public policy, public administration, international relations, or related field;
  • Familiarity with content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and marketing automation solutions (e.g., MailChimp); 
  • Event planning experience;
  • Foreign language proficiency.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States at the time of application and not require sponsorship for continued employment.

The External Affairs Specialist will earn between $65,000-$77,000 annually, commensurate with experience, and have access to Georgetown’s generous benefits package.

This position is designated as hybrid, which means candidates will be expected to work from CSET’s D.C. office at least 2-3 days per week.
