Management Fellow
Introduction
Loudoun County, Virginia, located approximately 35 miles outside Washington, DC. Loudoun County, plays a key role in the Northern Virginia region and participates in regional undertakings including those related to transportation/transit and road infrastructure, parks, mental health, public safety, and economic development. Recognized as one of the fastest growing counties in the United States, Loudoun boasts a thrilling and diverse local economy that will continue to expand with Metrorail's Silver Line opening of three new stations within the County in 2022.
Job Description
Loudoun County is looking for a bright, motivated recent MPA or MPP graduate (or related degree) to fill its two-year, paid fellowship program. The fellow will serve on the staff of the Department of Finance and Budget and will embark on unique, substantive projects throughout County Government.
The majority of the first year, the Management Fellow will participate as a key team member in the County's legislative program to provide support in preparation for and during the 2024 legislative session. The legislative program provides principal engagement in the development of legislative initiatives that may be pursued in upcoming legislative sessions, and the program also monitors ongoing legislative activities that may impact the County. The position will provide support in establishing a draft legislative program including researching, refining priorities, and engaging with County leadership for feedback to strategically vet potential legislative initiatives. During the legislative session, the fellow will track those initiatives as well as other legislation and manage feedback from departments on matters that may impact County operations. The remainder of the fellowship will be dedicated to an estimated three to five short-term projects designed to provide real world experience that develop research, analytical, and written communication skills.
Previous Management Fellow projects have included:
- Providing research and data analysis, including geospatial data, support to departmental efforts including public outreach and internal survey data analysis
- Performing process audits to guide the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Leading the development of online platform for performance measures by exploring PowerBI and Tableau for data visualization of multi-department measures for public reporting
- Monitoring and analysis of countywide performance measure data
Additionally, Fellows will attend meetings of the Board of Supervisors, various Finance and Budget meetings, and work with county staff on delivery of public services. Many past fellows have gone on to hold permanent roles with the County, though placement is not guaranteed following the two years.
This fellowship begins July 1, 2023 and ends June 30, 2025. The incumbent is eligible to receive health, dental and vision insurance; matching contributions to deferred compensation plan; and annual and sick leave benefits.
Hiring salary commensurate with experience.
Job Requirements
Applicants must have completed the requirements for a Master's Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Policy or related field by July 1, 2023. Proof of degree will be required prior to starting employment.
