Description of Intern Work Responsibilities/Projects:

The social media intern works within WETA’s Digital Media team to develop engaging, sharable content for WETA’s social media channels including our primary brand accounts, our Boundary Stones local history project accounts, and our Telly Visions British TV and Culture accounts.

  • Promoting WETA’s on-air broadcasts and digital content, spotlighting WETA’s community initiatives, and highlighting events and stories from around our organization across our various social platforms.
  • With guidance from Digital Media staff, the social media intern will draft social media posts and tailor them for various platforms; find photos and memes; develop quizzes and polls; and respond to comments from social media followers. Specific channels include WETA Facebook, @WETATVFM Twitter, @WETATVFM Instagram, @WETAPBS YouTube Community Tab, @BoundaryStones Twitter, @BoundaryStones Instagram (currently in planning stages), @Telly_Visions Twitter and Telly Visions Facebook.
  • Help produce regular updates (using internal metrics and social media management tools) tracking account analytics and engagement.
  • Create simple custom graphics, memes, and other images optimized for specific platforms Participate in weekly meetings with the larger Digital Media team.  
 
Learning Objectives:

  • Develop a greater understanding of social media voice and techniques for managing a brand Twitter account.
  • Develop increased familiarity and confidence with using various social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, in a professional capacity.
  • Analyze data to inform content decisions and promotional strategies.
  • Learn how to write engaging posts in various formats with different character limitations.
  • Work as part of a cross functional team that interacts with every other unit in the org to meet diverse business goals.
  • Become familiar with the world of public media.
 
Specific Skills Required:

  • Creative thinker who is comfortable using Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
  • Familiarity with social media management tools like Sprout Social, Hootsuite, or Loomly a plus.
  • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Interest in media and broadcasting.
           
Preferred Major: 

  • English, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or Digital Media.
 
LOCATION
 
WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
