Access to Theater Art Teacher (seasonal, part-time)
Partners for Youth with Disabilities is searching for an Art Teacher to instruct an upcoming session of our award-winning Access to Theater program.
Access to Theater is an inclusive theater program for teens and young adults. Its purpose is to develop communication, artistic, and leadership skills, and lasting professional and personal friendships. The main focus of the program is performing arts exploration and experimentation. Access to Theater participants explore all aspects of theater over the course of their involvement: acting, directing, improvisation, choreography, music, costumes, set design, and more.
Candidates should have the following skills:
Artistic skills: To be able to teach art to students in an Inclusive setting in a community-based program. Having knowledge of excellent artistic skills.
Communication skills: Excellent verbal and listening skills are essential for art teachers to have to facilitate regular interactions with students with and without disabilities and making it accessible. They can enable you to supervise groups of students and easily and clearly explain art assignments, art techniques, art materials, art history and aesthetics. You can respond to their questions and concerns and encourage them to express their unique ideas and opinions and become more creative.
Interpersonal skills: Well-developed interpersonal skills to get along with students and various other staff associated with the program. For instance, it may be necessary to collaborate on work duties with the creative manager.
Empathetic skills: Successful art teachers have strong empathetic skills that enable them to better understand their students' emotional cues. They listen to what they are saying verbally and non-verbally and can show sensitivity and understanding towards their opinions and perspectives. They provide them with the support and encouragement they need to perform well in art class and beyond.
Planning classes: Planning lessons on art in accordance with students' learning objectives. Preparing the classroom by gathering and setting up equipment. Developing students' drawing, coloring, and painting techniques. Providing instruction on the use of media such as graphite and charcoal pencils, as well as oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint. Recording and reporting on students' progress. Ensuring that the classroom is clean after each session. Monitoring inventory and sourcing art supplies, as needed. Attending artist meetings
Qualifications:
- Working towards or have a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with teaching qualification, or equivalent.
- Prior experience as an art teacher with middle and high school students ages 14 years to 22 years.
- Demonstrated excellence in a variety of art techniques.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Capacity to supervise group work.
- Outstanding planning and critical thinking skills.
- Supportive, flexible disposition.
Compensation: $25/ hr.
Days/Times: Tuesdays 3.30 -5.30 & Wednesdays 3.30 - 6pm
Dates: April 11- May 24th (off April 17- 21)
