Northeast Climate Hub Climate-Smart Agriculture and Forestry Communications Assistant

Start Date: June 12, 2023 
End Date: February 12, 2024
Compensation: $650 per week + $1000 monthly for housing

The Resource Assistants Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers.

Project Description:

The RAP intern will help coordinate and produce creative, multi-media content in collaboration with other team members of the USDA Northeast Climate Hub. This position is part of a cohort of 20 climate change-focused internships that will receive specialized training and opportunities to engage with other members of the cohort.

Types of tasks may include:

  • Research market for a potential podcast story/series that would be focused on investigating or discussing climate change challenges and/or mitigation/solutions in Northeast region. And depending on interest, help produce podcast episodes.
  • Help organize and coordinate regional climate change webinars with researchers, extension, natural resource managers, and farmers.
  • Interview webinar presenters to create short, candid but informative articles that highlight upcoming webinar topics and state clear climate change connections.
  • Work with webinar presenter(s) to write 1-page research briefs about information presented in webinar and include related/relevant resources.
  • Draft social media posts for the National USDA Climate Hub’s Twitter account that highlight the (Northeast) Climate Hub's work and share practical/important information within the Climate Hub's mission (to be reviewed by supervisor and Northeast Climate Hub team members).
  • Create story maps or interactive/dynamic materials to highlight existing USDA Northeast Climate Hub products.
  • Conduct literature reviews for science-based newsletter articles.
  • Help review and add tools to the Hub Toolshed.






Primary responsibilities of the position:

  • Provide new inventory support for facility points of contacts, logistics process tracking, training, user account creation, concessionaire permits and regional coordination. 
  • Prepare for annual season ramp up and ramp down, training coordination, presentations, reminders, articles in field coordination and on SharePoint.
  • Contact facility managers about refund requests and provide training on processing.
  • Work with managers to update public facing information on Recreation.gov.

Preferred Skills: 

  • Strong writing/oral and interpersonal skills 
  •  Strong file management skills
  • Ability to work within the Microsoft environment (e.g., Word, Excel, etc).
  • Familiarity and/or willingness to research/learn/use various web-based platforms that would host different types of media (from tweets and webinars to storymaps and podcasts).
  •  Familiarity with sound production and/or ability to use audio recording equipment – would be a bonus!
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Detail Oriented
  • Technical competence with computers and various software programs
  • Agile program management


Education Requirements:

We are looking for an intern who is interested in the intersection of science and creative, digital communications. Experience with social media, audio and/or podcast production preferred. Some background in environmental/climate sciences would be helpful, but not required. 
 
College degree in Communications, Marketing, or Journalism preferred, but not required.
College graduate from 1890 or Tribal college preferred.
