DESCRIPTION
Position Summary
The Marketing and Communications Intern will be immersed in the daily functions of the non-profit Tampa YMCA Marketing and Communications Department. Under direct supervision of the Communications and Social Media Manager and Digital Marketing Manager, the Intern will learn and contribute written and visual communication skills to the department’s initiatives including social media content, blog stories, press releases, media coverage, photography, website content, newsletters, email marketing, digital content planning and more. The Marketing and Communications Intern will learn the YMCA branding and voice and how to share the positive impact of YMCA programs like summer camp, diabetes prevention and swim lessons. The Intern will benefit from hands-on projects like writing stories of impact, urgent and informational copy and initiative promotions in the department that develops strategies and produces all marketing and communications collateral for the Tampa Y and YMCA of the Suncoast organizations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Learn and use YMCA branding and voice
- Write social media captions
- Write blog stories and headlines
- Write email subject lines
- Take photos and videos
- Sort and choose photos for social media, website, email, etc.
- Organize content on department server
- Contribute to content calendars
- Write press releases
- Contribute copy, photos for marketing deliverables
- Assist with content uploads to social media, website, etc.
- Attend media shoots
- Interns are expected to work between 16 – 20 hours per week

Potential projects:
The Intern will contribute to the department’s main goals – membership acquisition and retention, program promotion and philanthropic fundraising events. Hands-on learning experiences include using the Y brand voice, visual communications, graphic standards and styles from subject matter experts regarding internal and public-facing projects.
The Intern will have many opportunities to meet and engage with executives and directors across 23 locations in the Tampa Bay area.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Completed a minimum of three years of undergraduate program in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or similar field
- Strong writing skills
- Practical knowledge of AP Style
- Photography experience (or interest)
- Social media content or branding experience (or interest)
- Organization skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft products: Word, Excel, Teams
- PC operating systems
- Samples: writing (must), photography
Not required, but nice to have
- Familiarity of non-profit brand presences on social media
- Content management systems (CMS, website)
- Samples: social media content, visual communications, branding, website content
- Email marketing platforms
- Videography experience or interest
- Familiarity with Mac OS
- Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
- Internship experience
- Reliable transportation for local travel to YMCA Family Centers
- Google Analytics reporting
