Planner - Land Use

Description
Performs difficult skilled technical work on a variety of planning assignments for the City-County Planning Board, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Principal Planner.

Examples of Duties
Responsibilities of the position will include providing information and assistance on zoning, the rezoning process and the electronic site plan submittal and review system to customers and staff. The person in this position prepares reports on zoning cases and text amendments for Planning Board consideration; works in a team environment with other staff, citizens and public officials on planning projects; and presents reports, analyses, and recommendations to citizens and public officials.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience in site plan review, mapping, and spatial-based applications desired; requires a customer service orientation and the ability to communicate complex information to citizens, developers, and real estate professionals in a concise and understandable manner. Applicants should have the ability to use computers and other technology in analysis and presentation of information; the ability to present oral and written information clearly and concisely; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional colleagues and representatives of other public agencies

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with coursework in planning, geography, architecture, landscape architecture, public administration, or related field. Some experience preferred with planning and development principles and regulations, public outreach and engagement, presentations, and reading and interpreting development ordinances. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, speaking or hearing and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements
Valid driver's license.
May be required to work outside of normal work hours.
Writing samples may be requested as part of the interview process.
