Landscape Designer
JOB INFORMATION
Landscape Designer positions manage park planning and development projects from planning, to design, through construction phases; provide functional supervision over contract design consultants; prepare and/or oversee preparation of master plans/general development plans, site studies and reports, cost estimates, project budgets, landscape designs, construction drawings, and contract documents for parks, playgrounds, and other public facilities; review landscape, irrigation, engineering, architectural, electrical plans, and others prepared by private consultants for City park development projects and other City public facilities; act as liaison and consultant to other Parks and Recreation Department divisions, various groups, agencies, and other City departments to consult, advise, and provide technical assistance on plant materials, irrigation systems, water conservation, and other City standards relative to park facilities; negotiate agreements with developers, consultants, and other entities on park and recreation issues; make presentations to community groups, advisory committees, and the Parks and Recreation Board and City Council; and perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options:
- Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Design, Architecture, Planning, or a closely related field.
- Registration as a professional Landscape Architect with a state licensing board.
NOTE:
- Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of full-time professional-level Landscape Architecture experience, or Park and Recreation area design and development experience involving multi-acre projects. Qualifying experience must include ALL of the following:
- Project management of landscape architectural, architectural, subdivision, or park master planning for projects of various scales.
- Design of major irrigation and landscape projects.
- Review of final plans and specifications for construction of parks, open space, rights-of-way, and recreation facilities.
- Design of right-of-way landscaping and irrigation.
NOTES:
- A Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required experience.
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Presentations at public hearings to legislative bodies, community planning groups, and other advisory bodies.
- Preparation of policy documents, policies, studies, reports, etc. related to park and recreation standards, procedures, and projects.
- Design and construction management of major landscape architectural projects.
- Experience/training with Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), computer graphic programs, and/or Geographical Informational System (GIS) software.
