Engineer Intern Trainee - CIP (Technical Services Division Water Resources)

Performs engineering work under the direction of a licensed Professional Engineer, investigating, evaluating, planning, computer modeling, designing, constructing, managing, or inspecting public infrastructure projects.

Ideal Candidate
Hillsborough County Water Resources Department is seeking an Engineer Intern - Trainee to manage the development, design, and construction of potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water projects. The ideal candidate must be qualified to practice as an Engineer Intern - Trainee in the applicable discipline in the State of Florida. The Ideal Candidate must be able to pass the FE Exam and obtain their Engineer Intern Certification within 6 months of hire. The candidate should be familiar with Hillsborough County technical specifications and standard project management principles.  The candidate should be able to demonstrate attention to detail and be proficient in both oral and written communication and be available to support non-scheduled emergency repairs to water and wastewater infrastructure. This position may require after-hour and weekend work.

Job Distinctions

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Shadowing senior staff members, asking questions, and assisting wherever possible.

  • Raising concerns and requesting clarifications where appropriate to further the learning experience of engineering practices and the engineering profession.
  • Performs entry-level technical engineering work in a project management role within an engineering work group and/or performs technical review or design work of similar responsibility.
  • Becomes familiar with engineering knowledge and skills in a specific area of planning, design, or construction management; applies standard techniques and procedures as directed in performing a task or sequence of tasks for public infrastructure projects.
  • Under the direction of a supervisor or manager, reviews the work of engineering consultants engaged in planning survey, design, review, construction, operations, maintenance, and administration of engineering projects, programs, or systems.
  • Under the direction of a supervisor or manager, performs design tasks using current principles and practices of engineering; prepares project documents; performs construction observation; completes cost analyses, site plan reviews, feasibility studies, planning activities; and coordinates with others.
  • Assists with preparation of schedules and budgets for projects.
  • Assists with the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for road, bridge, potable water, sanitary sewage, and drainage construction.
  • Reviews surveys required for the design or construction of projects under the direction of a supervisor or manager.
  • Analyzing data and writing reports according to specifications

Minimum Qualifications Required

A 4-year Bachelor of Science degree from an EAC/ABET accredited engineering program, or ETAC/ABET accredited engineering technology program, or Florida Board of Professional Engineers Board approved equivalent education, in the relevant field of Engineering.
 
Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Must be certified by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers to practice as an Engineer Intern. To be eligible to be certified as an Engineer Intern in Florida, a candidate must have earned a Board-approved bachelor’s degree and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Qualified to practice as an Engineer Intern in the applicable discipline in the State of Florida; and
  • Four years of demonstrated active engineering experience.
  • Must meet all the eligibility requirements to apply and sit for the NCEES PE exam or obtain license by endorsement.
NOTE:
  1. Those hired into Tier 1 of the Engineer Intern classification must pass their FE Exam and obtain their Engineer Intern Certification within 12 months of hire, failing which the employee may be terminated for cause. Upon obtaining the Engineer Intern certificate, the employee will be promoted to Tier 2.
  2. Employees in the Intern classification (Tier 2 and Tier 3) will have eight years from the date of their Engineer Intern Certification to obtain their Professional Engineer license. Failure to obtain the Professional Engineer license within this time frame shall result in reclassification of their position to an Engineering Associate (Tier 3 or Tier 4, respectively).
  3. Employees in this classification (Tier2) that acquire the competencies and minimum qualifications for the next tier (Tier 3) will be able to apply for promotional opportunities through a competitive selection process. Employees will not automatically be upgraded to the next tier. Reclassifying a position is based on business need and financial impact and is not based solely on the job competencies or qualifications of the incumbent.
Emergency Management Responsibilities
In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
