CDC ORISE Communications Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Office of Smoking and Health (OSH) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The ORISE candidate would join the Health Communications Branch of the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), which is a division of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. Key content areas for the branch include media planning and evaluation for the Tips From Former Smokers National Tobacco Education Campaign and providing evidence-based health communication technical assistance to OSH funding recipients and partners. 
This ORISE candidate would primarily engage with our health communication technical assistance staff on research activities to enhance and provide evidence-based support to OSH funding recipients and partners as they implement media efforts toward reaching their tobacco prevention and control goals. Specific activities may include helping OSH subject matter experts to identify and interpret tobacco counter-marketing guidance and recommendations in response to technical assistance requests from funding recipients; to review, compile, and synthesize media and communications data and information from funding recipients and other sources to create summary reports or visuals to be used to identify trends and inform program planning; support technical assistance program evaluation efforts.
Learning Objectives: This training experience would complement and continue the participant's academic course of study and enhance their ability to contribute to the future technical workforce by allowing the candidate to apply and deepen their expertise in social marketing, program evaluation, and public health in the real-world context of national- and state funded public health media efforts.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.
Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before May 31, 2023. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred Skills:
  • Concentration in marketing and/or public health. Relevant coursework would include marketing research and strategy, communications, and public health-related courses. 
  • Communications campaign experience, data visualization skills using Excel and PowerPoint, and basic data management and analysis skills using Excel are preferred.
  • Project management skills and experience considered a plus.
