CDC NCIRD Morehouse School of Medicine Vaccine-Preventable Diseases Internship Program: Health Education and Communication Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available with the Health Education and Communication Branch (HECB), within the Immunization Services Division (ISD), in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. This opportunity is eligible for 100% telework from Atlanta. Additionally, this opportunity could be split into multiple opportunities depending on the relocation timing for the selected applicant or applicants.
Research Project: HECB is seeking (1) qualified and motivated candidate to conduct a scoping review on the use of infectious diseases case presentations in the education of healthcare professionals. The candidate would be expected to develop a manuscript, follow it through CDC clearance, and submit it to a peer-reviewed journal for publication under the direct supervision of HECB leads. The candidate will be mentored and collaborate with HECB leads and other CDC subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop 15-minute mini-case presentations for approximately ten routinely recommended vaccines. The case presentation will be available as online modules for healthcare providers throughout the United States.
Learning Objectives: The activities listed below represent the minimum training opportunities that the fellow will complete:
  • Conduct a scoping review on the use of infectious diseases case presentations in the education of health care professionals.
  • Identify search terms and appropriate library databases and determine appropriate inclusion/exclusion criteria.
  • Prepare manuscript(s) for submission in accordance with standards typical of submission to a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Develop 15-mins mini case PowerPoint presentations (with corresponding audio scripts) for approximately ten routinely recommended vaccines. 
  • Engage in meetings with leads through the duration and development of fellowship deliverables.
  • Hands-on training in various public health education and health communication duties with national-level impact.
  • One-on-one mentorship and learning opportunities from CDC professionals.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 20, 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for six months to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is part-time (20-40 hours/week).
Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. 
Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be a current Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) student pursuing a master's, doctoral, or medical degree in Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, Medicine, Public Health, or any of the other required disciplines and have completed at least one year to be received by May 31, 2023. Recent graduates from MSM will also be considered, and a degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred skills:
  • Ability to do literature reviews and interpret published literature pertaining to healthcare professional training 
  • Experience or education in public health communication or health education
  • Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and related software
  • Public health research methods and analyses
