Finishing Engineer Intern

Job Summary: Works directly with the Finishing Department’s Manager and has the responsibility for the establishment and maintenance of all special processing documents needed to maintain and satisfy NADCAP accreditation, customer special processing approvals and for the generation of production processes and product verification throughout the life cycle of any special process performed while adhering to all Align’s internal Quality System procedures.
Essential functions (What)
  1. This role supports secondary chemical operations (anodize, electropolish, passivation, etc.) as well as activities in support of strategic finishing needs. 
  2. Works independently or as part of a team to develop manufacturing concepts for secondary operations as well as implement and maintain these processes and equipment used. 
  3. Provides process engineering and controls support. Plans, conducts, and supports activities related to the development of new processes including researching current and emerging technologies, evaluating process cost, quality, and capability alternatives. 
  4. Performs work which involves complex conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment with highly complex features for which there may be no precedents. 
  5. Performs assignments that have complex objectives and require the investigation of multiple variables. 
  6. Is able to train, coach, and mentor fellow employees in areas pertaining to the job responsibilities. 
  7. Works independently in a manufacturing environment in compliance with the applicable Work Instructions and/or Quality Policies
  8. Develop manufacturing concepts for secondary operations as well as implement and maintain the processes and the equipment used. 
  9. Provides day to day support to various types of operations as e.g. but not limited to anodize, electropolish, passivation and other chemical based operations etc. as required in support of the assigned area. 
  10. Performs process tests along with associated inspection, process control, documentation and data collection activities. 
  11. Completes documentation as required by the process and applicable work instructions, follows sampling procedures, and completes forms and instructions for recording, evaluating, and reporting quality.
  12. Identifies and institutes state of the art new and innovative finishing technologies as well as process improvements for existing manufacturing processes utilizing appropriate engineering principles and standard strategies as e.g. Lean and 5S principles. 
  13. Is able to use various types of measuring instruments including numerous types of gages, micrometers, calipers, comparators, etc. for testing and data collection purposes. 
  14. Supports the development of work instruction, TDP’s , other control processes, and practices as it pertains to a certain defined cell or area. 
  15. May act as technical reference or perform special projects in individual areas of expertise. 
  16. Reviews all applied drawings and finishing specifications to identify requirements
  17. Approves and releases bill of materials for purchasing;
  18. Identifies needed masking requirements;
  19. Generates work instructions for individual part number processing;
  20. Assist in daily, weekly and monthly tank titrations and salt spray testing;
  21. Assist in-process inspection of products and release of materials from the department;
  22. Maintain NADCAP, customer and any regulatory bodies required documentation;
  23. Gathers and maintains statistical data for the monitoring, identifying improvements needed for processing stability and efficiencies;
  24. Performs departmental auditing;
  25. Generates and forward department certifications upon product verification and release;
  26. Reports product or processing non-conformances, internal/external audit results and any identified necessary or potential improvement opportunities to the Finishing Manager
  27. Encourages the proper use of PPE
  28. Must be able to wear personal safety gear as required to meet OSHA regulations, ie., goggles, gloves, back belt, apron, and respirator when required
  29. Basic blueprint reading and mil spec knowledge
  30. Fill out required regulated paperwork and required documentation
  31. Complete all required training
  32. Other duties as assigned
Skills/Knowledge/behaviors (How)
·        BS Degree in Chemical Engineering is preferred. Equivalent Technical/Engineering degree with demonstrated experience and performance may be considered.  
·        Success in project management and leadership of cross-functional teams. 
·        Strong written, verbal communication, and computer skills. 
·        Strong written, verbal communication, and computer skills required. 
·        Experience with anodizing, electropolish and passivation preferred.
·        Specific experience in stainless steel and titanium preferred.
·        Knowledge of machine safety requirements a plus. Some leadership ability or experience a plus.
