SUMMARY
Working with the Director of Learning & Interpretation, Community Outreach Manager and Glass Studio Manager, this position is responsible for the supervision and implementation of all youth and adult art classes. Works with the Community Outreach Manager and Glass Studio Manager to assure connectivity between other art making programming including Art After School, the Family Center, and Glass Art Workshops. Serves as the primary liaison for all paid art classes, workshops, and camps.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Promotes programs through communication with parents, the community, internal partners, and other organizations, including assisting students in making decisions on course selection based on pre-requisites and students’ previous experience.
- Develops and maintains familiarity with the scope of the Museum collection and art class offerings to provide information regarding all classes, workshops, studio sessions, and specialized programs.
- Acts as an ambassador for the art classes, Learning & Interpretation department, and Museum staff.
- Supervises contract art instructors, staff, and interns. Manages performance and employee relations.
- Curates exhibitions and experiences in the Education Gallery.
- Using related software and web-based programs as required, this position oversees all data processing facets of studio class registration from contact through payment. This includes, but is not limited to, invoicing, recording payments, processing payments, scholarship, and reconciling with Finance.
- Responsible for facilitating instructor and class needs, including scheduling, training, contracting, and departmental meetings.
- Responsible for ordering and organizing art supplies.
- Works with the People & Talent department to review applications, interview, hire, and coordinate all necessary Museum paperwork and information for new and returning art instructors in a timely manner. Information needs include, but are not limited to, background checks, employment information, payroll information, ID badges, contracts and instructor handbook.
- Creates staff development opportunities, such as instructor meetings and workshops.
- Establishes goals, objectives, strategies, and evaluation methods for all art classes.
- Manages distribution of scholarship funding.
- Provides routine administrative support for the Museum studio class program, such as the development of catalog copy.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in education, humanities, or cultural studies discipline, such as anthropology, African American studies, Asian studies, history, studio art, or art history is required.
- 3-5 years’ experience in a position requiring customer service, administrative experience, basic Word and Excel skills, and accurate recordkeeping and report generation employing a database.
- Previous experience with teaching art preferred.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES
- Broad knowledge of art supplies and techniques preferred.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to handle a varied workload, to multi-task, be detail-oriented with outstanding organizational skills and good follow-through.
- Must understand the urgency of deadlines and effectively complete time-sensitive tasks.
- Must be a self-starter able to identify projects/staff in need of assistance during slow periods.
RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports to the Director of Learning and Interpretation.
- Supervises contract art instructors, staff, and interns.
- Works closely with other Learning and Interpretation staff, TMA Art Instructors, Visitor Experience, Protective Services, IT, Finance, and People & Talent.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard open office work environment shared with co-workers, with related phone, computer and printer noise. Position requires ability operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, printer and phone system; Sound level in galleries varies from very quiet to noisy, depending upon activity level; May occasionally move art and lift up to 50 lbs.
