Internship – Television Production, Signature Dish
Part-time, non-exempt
Compensation: $15.00 per hour
Fall (September 11, 2023 – December 15, 2023)

Location: Hybrid - Arlington, VA - Campbell Place/Production Center
 
 
Description of Intern Work Responsibilities/Projects:
 
The television production intern works within WETA’s Local Production team to support the creation of local broadcast and digital programming, including Signature Dish, about dining in the DMV, and WETA Arts, about the local arts scene. The intern will be assigned to one of these two projects and additionally other support across the Local department as needed.
 
With guidance from Local Production staff, the television production intern will participate in all phases of series production. The intern will:

  • Research and report on potential stories.
  • Seek and manage releases on shoots and in edit.
  • Draft promotional copy.
  • Help produce show documentation using established templates.
  • Perform archival research using several online databases; and manage media using established workflows.
 
The intern will participate in meetings with the larger production team, and informational meetings including the entire department.  
 
Learning Objectives:

  • Develop skills in identifying compelling narratives, and the considerations in selecting stories.
  • Develop a greater understanding of broadcast video production workflows and requirements.
  • Develop increased familiarity and confidence with evaluating rights requirements, copyright status, Fair Use and Public Domain.
  • Learn how to write compelling copy for digital distribution mechanisms.
  • Work as part of a team that shares responsibility to meet airdates and reflect the community and communities in the DC area.
  • Become familiar with the world of public media.
 
Specific Skills Required:

  • Creative thinker who is comfortable using Microsoft and Adobe programs, and online databases.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Interest in documentary and/or fact-based television programming.
  • Interest in media, broadcasting and the DC metro area.
  • Familiarity with factual video programming a plus.
  • Familiarity with video production equipment and software a plus.
 
Other Requirements

  • Transportation
  • Ability to commit to minimum 3 consecutive days during regular business hours.
 
LOCATION
 
WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
