Middle School iLab Teacher

iLab Teacher Job Description (AY 2023-2024)

Hillside School, a Junior Boarding School serving grades 4-9, is seeking an enthusiastic iLab teacher with a strong academic background and passion for teaching middle school students beginning in September 2023.  The ideal candidate is able to tailor instruction to help students develop interest and excitement for innovation and to differentiate instruction based on individual needs to help every student achieve academic success.

The iLab teacher will be responsible for creating and facilitating engaging, hands-on learning experiences in our state-of-the-art Innovation Center. They will collaborate with students, teachers, and administrators to integrate technology, design thinking, and problem-solving skills into various subject areas, fostering creativity and critical thinking among students, and designing interdisciplinary work with other departments. The ideal candidate should possess a strong background in STEM fields, exceptional teaching skills, and a deep understanding of experiential learning methodologies.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and deliver dynamic lessons and projects that align with the curriculum, incorporating STEM principles and emphasizing problem-solving, creativity, and innovation.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop interdisciplinary projects that integrate technology and hands-on learning opportunities.
  • Guide students in the use of cutting-edge technologies and tools, such as 3D printers, robotics kits, coding platforms, and other maker space resources.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student collaboration, exploration, and experimentation.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to students on the safe and proper use of iLab equipment and tools, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Support and mentor students as they develop their ideas, encouraging their curiosity, creativity, and resilience.
  • Stay updated on the latest trends, research, and innovations in educational technology and maker education, and incorporate them into the iLab curriculum.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and evaluate assessments that measure student learning outcomes and growth.
  • Maintain an organized iLab space, ensuring that materials, equipment, and technology resources are well-maintained and readily available.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, projects, and iLab activities.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills, stay current with educational best practices, and advance knowledge of emerging technologies.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, STEM-related field, or a related discipline. A Master's degree is preferred.
  • Teaching certification and/or relevant teaching experience in a K-12 educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of STEM principles, educational technology tools, and maker education methodologies.
  • Experience designing and implementing project-based learning experiences that integrate technology and hands-on activities.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of educational technologies, including coding platforms, 3D printers, robotics kits, and other maker space tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction and adapt teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Passion for innovation, creativity, and fostering a growth mindset among students.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities effectively.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying updated on the latest educational trends and technologies.
Qualified candidates should embrace boarding school life.  They must be willing to teach a full schedule (16-20 periods per week), coach two seasons of sports (iLab), and reside on campus covering scheduled dorm duties on evenings and weekends.
