About the Position:

Under the direction of a Supervising Transportation Engineer, the District Division Chief of Maintenance, the incumbent acts in a supervisory capacity as a program and project manager of the Vegetation Management Program for the Division of Maintenance. The incumbent is responsible for the preparation of the District Vegetation Management Plan (VMP), which will function as the primary corridor level planning document for a 2–5-year term, updated on a 2-year cycle. The VMP is a two-part plan including a geospatial interactive map and accompanying report that discloses the Headquarters Maintenance (HQ MTCE) methodology and data used to identify priorities for vegetation management activities, contracts, grants, and locations for work by other agencies by agreement.

The incumbent assists in the planning, budgeting, contracting, implementing, scheduling and accountability reporting by District Maintenance work force and Contracted work force, as well as be responsive to the management goals, objectives, and metrics in the Caltrans Strategic Management Plan (SMP), the Maintenance Strategic Management Plan, the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Plan, and other organizational drivers and plans related to climate resiliency. The incumbent acts as Senior Lead and is responsible for directing and coordinating the work activities of the Environmental Scientist, Geographic Information System (GIS) Coordinator, supervising the work activities of a Landscape Specialist (Pest Control Advisor), and Water Manager. The incumbent works in partnership with District Maintenance staff, including the Region Managers, Field Crew Superintendents / Supervisors, and others to ensure implementation of vegetation management work is compliant with the Department of Procurement and Contracts (DPAC) contracting process, California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)/National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and environmental compliance policy, and annual performance metrics from HQ MTCE Office of Vegetation and Wildfire Management. Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Landscape Architect issued by the California Board of Landscape Architects is required.
