Art Teacher 2023-24 - North

Art, Secondary

PURPOSE

Provides students with qualitative information and experiences in design, techniques, and aesthetics, for the purpose of developing a life-long appreciation for the visual arts.

Assigned Responsibilities 

  1. Prepares students to be more visually aware of the world around them.
  2. Trains the student to respond to and justify judgments of works of art.
  3. Teaches students to express ideas and feelings through visual form.
  4. Guides students in the study of historical and contemporary aspects of visual arts from all cultures.
  5. Identifies, diagnoses, and prescribes remediation for problems in the students' creative work.
  6. Matches activities and materials to individual and groups skills and needs.
  7. Designs or selects and uses planned sequences of instruction for the development of design ideas and media technique.
  8. Maximizes time when students are paying attention and working on tasks directly related to the subject matter.
  9. Conducts interesting and well-paced classes using a variety of instructional techniques and materials.
  10. Makes sure students understand what to do before undertaking assignments.
  11. Assesses, keeps track of, and provides feedback promptly and often to students on their progress and assignments.
  12. Uses a grading system that is consistent, fair, and supportable.
  13. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  14. Provides instruction based on designated instructional guides, or develops alternate materials in prescribed district format.
  15. Maintains an orderly and supportive classroom environment in which students are actively participating and show respect for one another and for the teacher.
  16. Ensures that instructional activities and materials are clearly related to District, school, and department goals and objectives.
  17. Participates cooperatively on school, area, and district-wide activities.
  18. Follows specific standards, policies, and procedures of the building and district.
  19. Selects and requisitions required art equipment and supplies.
  20. Ensures that art equipment is properly used, maintained, and stored, and that inventory records are accurate and current.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Oregon Teaching Certificate valid for assignment.
  2. A portfolio of quality examples of personal work in area(s) of specialty (must bring to interview).
  3. Knowledge of design elements and principles.

Drawing

  1. Working knowledge of and the ability to demonstrate at least five drawing media and techniques associated with each.
  2. Ability to structure drawing problems for students to resolve.
  3. Working knowledge of and the ability to demonstrate matting and frame making techniques.

Calligraphy:

  1. Working knowledge of several writing techniques.
  2. Basic knowledge of bookbinding.
  3. Basic knowledge of papermaking.
  4. Ability to select papers for calligraphy.

Printing

  1. Working knowledge of at least three painting media--oil, acrylic, and water color.
  2. Knowledge of the history of painting in Europe and the United States.
  3. Ability to structure art problems and demonstrate techniques.

Weaving 

  1. Working knowledge of basic loom and off-loom weaving techniques.
  2. Working knowledge of several cultural forms of weaving.
  3. Understanding of design concepts as related to weaving.

Batik

  1. Working knowledge of dye mixing and application techniques.
  2. Awareness of the safety aspects of the batik process.
  3. Understanding of traditional and contemporary approaches to design.

Jewelry

  1. Working knowledge of metal fabrication techniques (sawing, soldering, forging, finishing).
  2. Ability to demonstrate enameling and casting methods.

Pottery 

Working knowledge of wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, and glazing methods.  

Photography

  1. Knowledge of black and white photo materials and processing.
  2. Knowledge of cameras and their operation.
  3. Knowledge of how to mount and prepare work for formal display.
  4. Knowledge of dark room organization and operation for efficient student use.

Print-Making

  1. Working knowledge of relief, intaglio, and silkscreen printing processes.
  2. Ability to select proper paper and inks for each of the above.
  3. Knowledge in printing, editing, and presentation for the demonstration of the above areas.

Sculpture

  1. Working knowledge of subtractive and additive sculpture methods.
  2. Ability to demonstrate various measuring and sculpture finishing methods.

Stained Glass

  1. Knowledge of design and pattern making.
  2. Knowledge of techniques in the construction of stained glass art.
  3. Ability to present and frame finished glasswork.

Salary Range: $45,478 – $89,512 (Salary is based on the 2022-23 schedule and is subject to change)
