Student Success Mentor AmeriCorps

ABLE Early Childhood, an AmeriCorps program, supports school readiness skills in 3- 6-year-old students. Student Success Mentors will serve full-time in pre-K and kindergarten and classrooms with Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School (BuffSci). Mentors serve under the guidance of lead teachers and are coached/mentored through daily hands-on service learning.

BuffSci is a tuition-free, college preparatory charter school for grades pre- Kindergarten through 12th. They are dedicated to providing quality education to a diverse body of students of WNY... BuffSci provides an environment designed to empower each student to become a lifelong learner, and develop skills in goal-setting, critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication, collaboration, cooperation, self-discipline and creative expression.

Position Summary: The Student Success Mentor will serve full-time to uphold the mission and vision of BuffSci. The mentor will be responsible for assisting in a pre-K classroom with lesson plan preparations, building strong relationships with students and families, supporting strong classroom management, using data to drive instruction, and actively collaborating with lead and assistant teachers.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Submit weekly intervention data
  • Support classroom logistical needs i.e., preparing classroom resources and materials, assisting students unpack in the morning and pack up in the afternoon
  • Supervising support during breakfast, lunch, recess, and snack
  • Participate in schoolwide cultural events and celebrations
  • Adhere to AmeriCorps and Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Invest in school-wide systems and structures that maximize student learning.
  • Reinforce a disciplined culture of high academic and behavioral standards through strong classroom management
  • Provide students with frequent and accurate behavioral feedback
  • Serve professionally with the assigned Lead Teacher and support teachers
  • Assist with differentiated instruction/Small Group Pull-Outs
  • Be flexible and have strong communication skills
  • Communicate frequently with families
  • Other classroom and school duties as assigned.

  • Frequent significant decision and problem-solving abilities.
  • Unwaveringly high expectations for all students, with the belief that every child should have access to a college education
  • Commitment to upholding and executing BuffSci's mission and educational model
  • Experience working with students in an urban setting, or a passion to pursue this work
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively with diverse audiences including students, staff members, families, and community member

Requirements:

  • Preference for individuals who reflect the backgrounds of the students served
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien
  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply

  • Participate in occasional physical service projects
  • Engage in service opportunities coordinated by the NY AmeriCorps State Commission with approval from the ABLE and school staff

Pay: $1,776.14 per month
