Project Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY

A Project Engineer is responsible for a variety of tasks on various types of projects. This role is well-suited for someone who is looking to gain broad knowledge about existing buildings, construction practices, and engineering. Work will include visits to project sites, analysis of collected data, writing of technical engineering reports, and direct collaboration with experienced engineers. Office work can be performed remotely (home office, workshare office, etc.); however, inspections will be performed at the location of the associated project. This role reports directly to the President and/or Director of Operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform field inspections on a full spectrum of buildings, including old and new construction, residential and commercial structures, and high and low-rise buildings. 
  • Write, review, and assess inspection reports for clients, ensuring clients receive clear, timely, and high-quality reports for assigned projects including field inspections, technical writing, and associated cost estimations. 
  • Review construction documents to understand the construction methodology and perform takeoffs.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete communications with Operations and Project Management staff, ensuring project needs and deadlines are being met.
  • Actively participate in project meetings and weekly team meetings.
  • Role could grow into serving as a day-to-day point of contact for key clients in collaboration with Project Management.
  • Develop project objectives by reviewing project proposals and plans and conferring with the engineer team.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Operations and Project Management.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or Architectural discipline such as Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Construction Engineering Technology.
  • 0 to 4 years of construction or field engineering experience in a technical role.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in buildings and/or construction activities, including a practical knowledge of building and construction means, methods, and materials.
  • Knowledge of building codes, ASTM, AAMA, and discipline-specific standards and testing procedures.
  • Strong understanding and application of documented engineering assessment tools and techniques in order to execute required activities.
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record and insurance; access to a reliable vehicle for job site travel required. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and contract documents.
  • Ability to evaluate contractors’ work in order to detect potential problems.
  • Critical thinking mindset effective at problem solving site issues.
  • Strong organization and documentation skills, including proficiency in technical writing standards.
  • Highly organized, adaptable, and flexible to balance the needs of multiple, concurrent projects.
  • Ability for travel requiring a reliable form of transportation.
  • Proficient with utilizing a variety of computer interfaces and software including MS Office, Bluebeam Revu, and Criterium’s proprietary software.
  • General knowledge of methods and procedures for construction and building materials.
  • Safety management.
  • Candidate must be authorized to work in the U.S.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Requires some strenuous physical exertion such as climbing ladders, crawling, or crouching in restricted areas. Occasionally lifting objects over 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to be sit (30%), stand (70%), reach, bend, and move about projects or work sites.
