Engineering & Operations Manager

WTTG/WDCA – Engineering & Operations Manager (Regular Full-Time)

FOX 5 DC / FOX 5 Plus, based in the Washington, DC media market, is looking for a highly motivated, organized, and creative Engineering & Operations Manager. The ideal candidate works equally well with people and technology. Effective communication skills are required. We operate in a fast-paced environment where new challenges pop up daily. You will need to possess the ability to prioritize deadlines, juggle multiple objectives, and quickly pivot in response to the ever-changing demands of a live news environment. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and mentor a team of broadcast engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and development.
  • Oversee master control operations for our busy duopoly.
  • Manage the successful execution of engineering projects, including design, and ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards. 
  • Support a state-of-the-art ST 2110 facility.
  • Assist the VP of Engineering and Operations in the planning and design of station projects.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, innovations, and best practices. Lead research and development efforts to explore new technologies, evaluate feasibility, and recommend implementation strategies.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks, ensuring the security and integrity of systems, data, and infrastructure. 
  • Assist the VP of Engineering and Operations in developing business continuity plans and response strategies for potential disruptions.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC and other regulatory standards and industry best practices.
  • With your team, maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, ensuring comprehensive and accessible records of processes, procedures, and project specifications.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Engineering and Operations to develop strategic capital plans and departmental expense budgets, ensuring effective financial planning and resource allocation.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in broadcasting, electronics, computer science, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
  • Five years of progressive experience in broadcast technology, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing teams in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the requirements of a 24/7/365 live news operation, including responding to after-hours calls.
  • Demonstrable technical knowledge and expertise in broadcast-related technologies including but not limited to SMPTE ST 2110, AES 67, ATSC RF and terrestrial transmission systems, IP networking, information security, virtual computing platforms etc.
  • Comprehensive understanding of broadcast television production workflows.
  • Strong strategic thinking and creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate challenges and develop effective solutions.
  • Project management experience, including budgeting, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience in a union environment is strongly preferred.
  • SBE and IT certifications considered a plus.

 

Candidates must be able to work a flexible work schedule. Local travel, overtime, early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call responsibilities will be required. Must have, or be willing to obtain, a valid driver’s license and must have a clean motor vehicle record (MVR).
