About the Job: Successful candidates will be employed by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) stationed at Stennis Space Center, MS. NAVOCEANO is the Navy’s premiere center for operational oceanography.

Incumbents may be required to travel for extended periods, typically less than 50 percent of the work year, on an oceanographic survey ship or to a shipyard. Assignments when on travel require considerable physical exertion such as standing for extended periods, frequently climbing stairways/ladders, occasionally lifting instrumentation in excess of 50 pounds, crouching or working in restricted areas while the survey platform is in motion. Medical certification of fitness for sea duty is required.
Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate a strong ability to perform the following required tasks:
. Design, develop, test, install, and provide field support for complex shipboard or remotely operated oceanographic/hydrographic/acoustic survey systems using mechanical or electrical Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
. Operationally verify oceanographic data collection systems and supporting equipment.
. Prepare engineering functional and performance specifications for complex systems and equipment.
. Prepare engineering documentation including: schematics, block diagrams, assembly drawings, network lists, bill of materials, theory of operation and maintenance manuals, SOPs, software flow charts, and source code with comments for system design and design modifications.
. Work on multidisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers and technicians.
Basic Requirements: Appointments to Federal positions will be made at the GS-05, GS-07, or GS-09 level and have a full performance level of GS-12. Opportunities are available for applicants who meet the basic qualification requirements outlined below in the following fields:
. Engineering (08xx) - Degree that (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
