This is an overnight camp counselor position from May 14-August 9. 

The Music Activity Instructor receives a weekly stipend of $600, housing, and meals. Plus every Friday night and Saturdays OFF! The Woodlands provides a pre-planned paid break from July 1-July 5.

Job Summary

The Music Instructor is primarily responsible for the planning and implementation of Woodlands’ Musical educational experiences. The Music Instructor’s role is to assist camp participants in expanding their awareness and understanding of music and music related activities through creative and diverse programs. Activities will be modified or adapted to include all participants in these learning experiences. 

  

Program Responsibilities 

  1. Develop the Music Program’s activity plans, goals, and objectives.
  2. Collaborate with Activity Coordinator to develop the music schedule and activity plans before the initiation of each camp.
  3. Develop a Music Program Guide which the program staff will reference to assist them in the implementation and promotion of desired therapeutic experiences for each program.
  4. Develop creative and diverse activity plans relative to Music. A variety of activity plans should be developed in which camp counselor staff may easily implement during times when the Music Instructor is not readily available.
  5. Plan, supervise and implement activities that have socialization, independence, recreation, self-perception and health/wellness goals.
  6. Therapeutic aspects of the Music program include but are not limited to:
  • Tactile/sensory stimulation
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Teamwork and socialization
  • Self-esteem and independence
  • Increased knowledge of modifications and adaptive equipment
  • Quality of life and elevated mood

7. Plan activities that are both “age” and “ability” appropriate. Ensure that all necessary adaptations have been made to include all participants.  

8. Inform participants and staff of all safety precautions when participating in a program or activity. All safety guidelines should be followed when planning and leading programs. 

9. Advocate for awareness of music as a recreational pursuit. 

 

Documentation 

  1. Construct an Activity Plan with step by step instructions and resources required.
  2. Objectively report observations during programs to counselors.
  3. Participate in activity debrief with Activity Coordinator after activities.
  4. Conduct self-evaluations for each program and report results to Activity Coordinator.

 

Staff Responsibilities 

  1. Uphold all Woodlands’ polices and regulations.
  2. Attend all necessary staff meeting and training sessions.
  3. Consult with Activity Coordinator and other staff when assistance is needed with any aspect of program planning or implementation.
  4. Work closely with appropriate program staff in managing your scheduled work hours on a weekly basis.
  5. Serve as cabin assistant during camp.
  6. Fulfill all personal care needs for assigned participants.

Program Area and Equipment 

  1. The programming “areas” include, but are not limited to: Activity Center, Jewel, Quad, Amphitheater
  2. Keep an inventory and maintain all equipment and supplies pertaining to the program.
  3. Clean and maintain equipment and program area daily. Ensure that all equipment is in good condition for safe use by campers and staff.
  4. Report unsafe conditions to Activity Coordinator.
  5. When necessary, ensure the sanitation of equipment and supplies before and after every session.
  6. Coordinate supplies with the Activity Coordinator two weeks before camp session.

 

Essential Qualifications  

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • CPR/AED/First aid Instructor certification
  • Experience developing programs and activities for individuals with physical/mental/cognitive disability.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Flexibility in scheduling.
  • Act 33/34 clearance, FBI background check description.
  • Ability to Pass a Drug Screening
  • Ability to ascend and descend slopes and transverse a variety of indoor and outdoor settings and uneven trails
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch in order to assist participants or work with the WFI equipment.
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information with all WFI staff, participants, families and guests
  • Ability to safely and securely and frequently: grasp, lift, transport, position, and place participants and WFI equipment weighing at least 50 lbs.
