Intern - Field/Lab Technician (Geotechnical/Construction Materials Testing)

Job Description

We are looking for eager intern candidates interested in gaining real world experience in the geotechnical engineering space.  As an intern, you'll be exposed to the various aspects of the industry, working alongside some of the best engineers and techs in the region!  Make no mistake, this isn't a "fetch coffee and make copies" internship; we're looking for hard-working, dedicated, anxious-to-learn individuals to fill these spots.  If that sounds like you - read on!

Interns will be exposed to geotechnical work, lab work, and field work. Throughout the course of the summer (approximately 10 weeks) interns will focus their work in one or more of the following areas:

  • Geotechnical: coordination of underground utilities, marking boring locations, verifying access, geotechnical drilling
  • Soils lab: performing and calculating Atterberg-limits, sieve analysis, proctor compaction, one-dimensional swell tests
  • Concrete lab: marking and stripping cylinders, checking dimensions of cylinders, breaking cylinders, calculating strength of cylinders
  • Field (soils): field density testing, collecting samples, observing proof rolling, observe plastic sheeting placement, lime observations
  • Field (concrete): testing plastic concrete, casting specimens for strength testing, evaluation of rebar placement

Actual intern work and assignments will depend on the interest of the intern and the needs of the company.

Summer interns will also have the opportunity to meet with company executives and participate in other professional development activities. At the end of the summer, interns will prepare a short presentation for department leadership sharing what they learned throughout the internship.

Education and/or Experience

Interns must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. All majors will be considered, but preference will be given to those in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, geosciences, geology, construction management, concrete management, or a related field. Successful interns will be able to effectively communicate and apply concepts obtained in coursework to their daily activities.

Interns must live near or be able to move to the internship location on their own. We DO NOT cover relocation expenses for interns.
