Intern - Field/Lab Technician (Geotechnical/Construction Materials Testing) - Houston west

Job Description

We are looking for eager intern candidates interested in gaining real world experience in the geotechnical/construction materials engineering spaces.  As an intern, you'll be exposed to the various aspects of the industry, working alongside some of the best engineers and technicians in the region!  Make no mistake, this isn't a "fetch coffee and make copies" internship; we're looking for hard-working, dedicated, anxious-to-learn individuals to fill these spots.  If that sounds like you - read on!

Interns in the Austin/Round Rock area offices will be exposed to geotechnical work, construction materials engineering work, laboratory work, and field work.  Throughout the course of the summer (approximately 10 weeks) they will rotate through 3-4 of the following areas and their related responsibilities:

  • Geotechnical: coordination of underground utilities, marking boring locations, verifying access, geotechnical drilling observations, etc.
  • Soils lab: performing and calculating atterberg-limits, sieve analysis, moisture-density relationship compaction, one-dimensional swell tests, etc.
  • Concrete lab: marking and stripping cylinders, end grinding of cylinders, checking dimensions of cylinders, breaking cylinders, calculating strength of cylinders, etc.
  • Field (soils): field density testing, collecting samples, observing proof rolling, observe soil stabilization procedures, etc.
  • Field (concrete): testing plastic concrete, casting specimens for strength testing, evaluation of rebar placement, observation and testing of post-tensioned tendons, etc.

Summer interns will also have the opportunity to meet with company executives and participate in other professional development activities.  At the end of the summer, interns will prepare a short presentation for department leadership sharing what they learned throughout the internship.

Education and/or Experience

Interns must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. All majors will be considered, but preference will be given to those in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, geosciences, geology, construction management, concrete management, or a related field.  Successful interns will be able to effectively communicate and apply concepts obtained in coursework to their daily activities.

Interns must live near or be able to move to the internship location on their own.  We DO NOT cover relocation expenses for interns.
