Student Assistant- Engineering/Architectural Sciences

The Emission Certification and Compliance Division (ECCD) is recruiting a Student Assistant for its Heavy-Duty Greenhouse Gas certification section (HDGHGCS) within the New Vehicle and Engine Programs Branch (NVEPB). This section is responsible for certification of new heavy -duty vocational vehicles, tractors, Zero Emissions Powertrains (ZEPs), trailers, and aerodynamic(aero) devices produced for sale and use in California. Test and modeling data and related technical information, provided my manufacturers, are reviewed to determine if new heavy-duty vehicles, ZEPs, trailers, and aero devices comply with state GHG emission control laws and regulations. Upon a determination of compliance, Executive Orders approving the sale of these vehicles, trailers, powertrains and aero devices are prepared for signature by the Division Chief. The section also assists CARB's regulatory and enforcement staff by providing certification data, information and expertise for reviewing draft proposed regulations and for case development of violations, respectively.


Under close supervision of the Section Manager, Student Assistant is responsible for working with technical staff in the HDGHG program and other new vehicle and engine certification programs performing paraprofessional duties. The candidate will work part-time, participating in various phases of the certification process. Responsibilities include gathering, tabulating, and analyzing engine/equipment/vehicle certification emissions data submitted by manufacturers for their Vehicle and ZEP families; updating and maintaining complex certification databases; remediating signed Executive Orders and letters to be compliant with ADA requirements for web-posting; preparing segments of reports and correspondence; and performing any other duties that may be necessary to meet the needs of the section. The student will be in a training capacity and work closely with the Section Manager. The candidate will work part-time, participating in various phases of the certification process.

Working Conditions

 

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.
