Landscape Special Projects Intern

Position:  Landscape Special Projects Internship
Department/Division: Landscape and Grounds / Operations
Status: Internship (one position available)
Pay: 12.50 per hour
Reports to: Director of Landscape and Planning
Benefits: Parking Access and Amenity Passes, optional housing available
Retirement: State of Georgia Retirement System (GDCP) 
Duration: 10 - 12 weeks beginning approximately mid-May 2024

Summary:
The Jekyll Island Authority is a state recreational Authority that manages and operates Jekyll Island as a vacation and meeting destination.  The landscape division is charged with daily maintenance and upkeep of a 97-acre Historic District and nearly 4,000 acres of both natural and developed lands.  The Division’s main goal is trustworthy stewardship of the Island’s natural and cultural resources. One intern position is being offered in the Landscape Special Projects Division.  The intern is expected to work 10 - 12 weeks and will work under the direct supervision of the island’s Landscape Architect/Director of Landscape and Planning.  

Description:
The Summer 2024 primary project will involve creating the final Planting plans for the Island’s Future Safety Complex. The landscape plan will include planting design, planting plans for a series of bioswales to handle most storm water on site, irrigation design, some hardscape improvements/retaining walls and cost estimates for construction. 
Additional projects include work on creating landscape renovation plans for Goodyear Cottage in the island’s Historic District as well as a tree inventory and preliminary vegetation screening plans for a Georgia Power sub-station expansion.
Research and design a gopher tortoise exhibit for Camp Jekyll which will include containment measures and creating suitable habitat for this rare tortoise species. 
Conduct extensive research on suitable case examples and upcoming trends and features for a future combo restaurant/ retail nursery outlet to be located on Jekyll Island. Other work assignments will include introductory surveying to create a topo plans and base maps for miscellaneous projects. 


The intern will also be introduced to all aspects of landscape installation and plant production for Jekyll Island as well as be actively involved in design aspects for a multitude of other landscape projects as they arise, including assisting with writing permit applications and reviewing other island-wide landscape proposals as well as identifying potential sites and conceptual planting plans for the Island’s Reforestation Program. 
Work activities outside of the office will include landscape construction, general surveying, colorscape and planting installation, and all aspects landscape management. 
This intern position will spend roughly 70% of their time in the office and the remainder of their time in the field, being directly involved with the hands-on aspects of landscape installation and assisting the Director with construction related issues as they arise at a multitude of Island-wide projects.


Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
Enrolled in or recent graduate of a B.S. or master’s program for Landscape Architecture. 
Potential candidates must also possess fundamental drafting skills and be eager to participate in tasks requiring physical labor, working in extreme heat and humidity.  No previous landscape construction or design experience is necessary.
Pre-arranged course credit, if applicable, is the responsibility of any student and his or her institution of learning.  
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Have ability to communicate effectively and listen to directions.


Note: This is a paid internship at $12.50/hr.  Shared housing on the Island will be available on Jekyll Island that will be paid by the employer with a partial-refundable $200.00 security deposit.  Interns will also receive a limited number of complimentary passes for several of the Island’s amenities, including the water park, tennis, and golf.  Interested students please fill out an application at www.jekyllisland.com and submit a resume and portfolio link.
