Engineering Intern

ENGINEERING INTERN 

What type of work will I be doing? As a summer intern for the Department of Engineering, you’ll split your time between two divisions: the Environmental Services Division, and the Wastewater Division. When assisting the Environmental Services Division, you will help to develop and implement a new program to administer grant funds to facilitate septic disconnections and connections to public sewer. Septic tanks are a known source of bacteria water quality pollution, and this new grant program will help remove septic tanks in Newport News. 

 

You may create and conduct outreach to residents to generate program interest, create contractual documents, conduct site visits, and assist with participant selection. As time allows, you may assist with data entry, fieldwork, and education/outreach. 

 

When assisting with the Wastewater Division, you will be out in the field, taking riverine and beach water samples for a bacteria study. Samples must then be driven to a lab for testing. For this task, a satisfactory driver’s license record must be furnished, and you must take an online driving training course administered by the City in order to be able to utilize the City’s motor pool vehicles. Training will be provided for sampling. 

 

You can expect to be exposed to the elements and varied outdoor topography. You may also assist with analyzing and organizing study results using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. 

 

How much does this internship pay and when do I start? The pay rate is $15/hour, for up to 35 hours per week. The duration is 12 weeks (starting the first week in June). 

 

What are the qualifications for this position? This internship requires effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing. The ability to work independently with strong situational awareness is vital for safety during fieldwork. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software is necessary. A satisfactory driving record is a must.
