Engineer II

Engineer II – Grand Island, NE Field Office

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., (DU) the world’s leading wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking a motivated civil engineer to join our team.  The successful applicant will become part of a committed team of biologists and engineers dedicated to the planning, design, and construction of wetland restoration and enhancement projects. Operating within the Great Plains Region, which spans seven states, the Grand Island Field Office primarily serves Nebraska, Kansas, and South Dakota. This role provides substantial job satisfaction for individuals passionate about wildlife conservation.

Qualifications:

  • Education: B.S. in Civil or Agricultural Engineering or equivalent degree from an EAC/ABET accredited engineering program
  • Certification: Registered EIT or PE, with the willingness to obtain registration in assigned states.
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Knowledge of hydrologic modeling, structure hydraulics, open channel flow, earthen dams, spillways, gates, structures, pipes, erosion control, riverbank stabilization, construction staking, inspection, cost estimation, and project management. 
    • Experience with topographic surveys and construction staking using Trimble RTK GPS equipment.
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil3D is essential for creating surfaces from ground-based surveys and LiDAR data/maps, developing construction plans and exhibits, and generating earthwork quantities. Ability to create alignments, corridors, feature lines, profiles, and gradings is crucial.

Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are necessary. Candidates should exhibit self- motivation, goal orientation, and problem-solving abilities within a collaborative team environment. Candidate must be able to perform strenuous outdoor activities in challenging environmental conditions, often requiring the use of an ATV.

Responsibilities:

Ducks Unlimited Engineers handle a range of wetland, riparian, and associated habitat restoration projects, from start to finish. The project life cycle encompasses scoping and proposal development, surveying, drafting, engineering design, project bidding,  construction staking, field inspections, and construction management. Building and maintaining strong relationships with local, state, and federal personnel, private landowners, and other conservation partners is crucial for project success. The position required occasional overnight travel and work outside normal business hours, although most travel consists of day trips. While weekend work is rare, commitment to project timelines and goals is essential.

Specific duties include:

  • Collaborate with biological staff to prepare proposal scopes of work and budgets.
  • Interpret, adapt, and apply principles of engineering, surveying, and construction management.
  • Develop comprehensive engineering designs, reports, project plans, and technical specifications.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide support  for  permit application  development.
  • Conduct field inspections and oversee construction management as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and schedules by consultants and contractors.
  • Serve as a contracting officer, creating bidding documents and managing budgets to ensure contract compliance.
  • Perform fieldwork, including strenuous outdoor activities in challenging  environmental conditions, and independently working in remote areas. Using an ATV as required.
  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours, travel overnight, and occasional  travel for extended periods. Weekend work is a rare occurrence.
  • Supervise technician staff and serve as a representative of DU with stakeholders.
