To continue our standard of excellence, Piedmont is seeking a motivated, reliable leader to join our team as a Safety Management System Manager. The Manager, Safety Management System (SMS) is responsible for the management, administration, security, and operation of the SMS (14 CFR §5). In addition, the Manager, Safety Management System (SMS) monitors safety issues, provides safety education, investigates incidents and accidents, and makes recommendations to improve safety in the workplace. The successful candidate will Possess strong operational or safety educational experience and professional qualifications in aviation. This position will report to the Senior Manager of Flight & Maintenance Safety.
Essential Duties:
- Responsible for the daily administration of the company's SMS (14 CFR §5)
- Perform data analysis and root cause analysis to identify hazards and/or ineffective risk controls
- Collect operational data for purposes of Safety Assurance (SA)
- Manage the Safety Risk Management (SRM) documentation in the company's web-based safety management and reporting software
- Provide regular reports to senior management on the SMS status and compliance
- Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of risk controls
- Develop and implement philosophies, policies, plans, goals, methods, and standards to improve the company SMS
- Represent the Safety Department in internal and external safety meetings
- Ensure that SRM and SA are conducted in accordance with 14 CFR §5 and company standards throughout the organization
- Conduct Safety evaluations, audits, and inspections
- Investigate and report on incidents and accidents; make recommendations to preclude recurrences
- Manage and assist with safety department presentations and statistical reports
- Represent the company at industry meetings and exchange industry SMS information
- Responsible for the initial training, recurrent training, and support of the operational departments' SMS (14 CFR §5)
- Publish periodic SMS Bulletins/Alerts
- Actively support the Internal Evaluation Program (IEP)
- Assist in the support of the company’s and parent company’s Emergency Response Programs
Job Qualifications and Competencies:
- Possess strong operational or safety educational experience and professional qualifications in aviation
- Knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Security Management Systems (SeMS) (14 CFR §5)
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs, including database and spreadsheet programs
- Project management and analytical skills
- Proficient verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines
- Assist managers and government agencies at the highest level of professionalism
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision in support of the Safety Department
- Knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)/Environmental Regulations, and standards applicable to airline industry
- Understanding of aviation standards and industry best practices
- Strong work ethic, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and a positive attitude toward teamwork
- Ability to process and analyze data to present reports in a logical manner
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in aviation, science, or engineering field
- Relevant work experience, preferably in 14 CFR Part 121 air carrier operations, quality control, maintenance, operations, safety, or a combination thereof
- Statistical methods experience
- Experience with electronic databases and analytical tools
- Previous auditing and/or safety investigation experience
- Academic Safety Education/Training
- Strong reasoning and logical/analytical skills
Work Environment:
- Standard office environment, use of telephones, computers, and other office equipment
- Some travel may be required
- Work weekends, nights, holidays and/or irregular shifts as needed
Physical Requirements:
- Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
