Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to let your supervisor know that you would like to try different stuff from your assignment.

Summer Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed learning about the type of work that Lockheed Martin does, and meeting so many new people. I really enjoyed an offsite vendor trip in NY. It was really interesting to see how many different parts are used in their product, and how detailed it is to track all of those parts.

Electronics Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Littleton, CO

What I liked

The company did a fantastic job of giving me a challenging but attainable and highly rewarding task. I felt respected and valued by my team but was not under an immense amount of pressure. LM did a great job of adapting my experience due to COVID by taking precautions but still organizing virtual and onsite intern experiences. Overall a fantastic summer and I am excited to return.

What I wish was different

More networking opportunities - there were much less opportunities available due to COVID compared to previous summers. It was hard to find new people and make connections without taking a huge initiative and cold calling people around the company.

Advice

Come in with a humble and optimistic outlook. Be open to different ideas and different methods of engineering compared to what you might have learned at school or at another company. Learn how to learn and don’t be afraid to try things out yourself - you *probably* don’t have the ability or break anything, so it doesn’t hurt to try! That being said, don’t be afraid to ask questions. People here love to help and love talking about their jobs.

Systems Engineering Intern

May 2020 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

I liked being able to have a physical internship as opposed to a virtual internship like everybody was having.

What I wish was different

I wish that more employees had opted into working in person instead of working from home.

Advice

Regardless of the situation you are in or the world is in, work with what you have and make the best of it.

Computer Research Scientist Intern

May 2019 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

The atmosphere is fun, they have a great team of engineers who welcome you with open arms and treat you as an equal. The work is intense and exciting, you contribute to important projects and can see the impact you have. Every person there is happy to answer your questions; I am continuously picking their brains. They challenge you to step outside your comfort zone so that you can grow, but you never feel like you've been thrown in the deep end. There is minimal "bloat" to the internship program; you begin on your project within a day or two of starting. This was an incredible experience.

What I wish was different

The hiring process could have been a little smoother. A lot of the communication was handled by HR interns, and sometimes the ball got dropped mid-communication, requiring me to reach out to others.

Advice

Take notes on any constructive feedback you get, whether it be at a career fair or during/after an interview. I was informed of knowledge areas I lacked, and knew what to focus on going forward to set myself apart. Take their advice to heart and put in the effort to better those areas! This will help you in your career now and in the future.
