Lockheed Martin

Contracts

July 2019 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I Love the professional environment and how I actually felt like an asset to the team. Not just an ‘intern’

What I wish was different

If they would give me more opportunity to grow this into a career. It is very hard to network and make connections in this particular environment. Wish I could know if I would get a job offer after graduation. Very unknown

Advice

There is a lot of competition, it is very hard to land a full time position with them. Even being a CWEP can’t guarantee you a job after graduation.

Safety Intern

May 2019 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

I never did any of the “intern duties” like checking dates, making copies, or anything like that. They trusted me from the beginning and have been really supportive of all my work. It is fast pace and exciting, you are not stuck behind a desk all day.

What I wish was different

First year of such a large intern group, could have been a little more organized

Advice

Be willing to be comfortable talking with others and getting to know LOTS of people.

Financial Analyst Intern

May - August 2019 • Denver, CO

What I liked

Promoted a learning environment. Got exposure to many different business sectors at Lockheed Space. Got the opportunity to shadow various business leaders.

What I wish was different

Had the opportunity to be more hands on in some projects/ tasks.

Advice

Lockheed stresses the important of learning and educating over completing menial tasks for interns. It was a great first internship to learn about the operations of the corporate world.

Autonomy Intern

May - August 2019 • Stratford, CT

What I liked

Really interesting work if you like implementing theory in software. They put interns on tasks that they would do themselves at some point, so if you return for another internship, you might see your project in use. None of the tasks are high priority so it's not a big deal if you didn't get to finish what you were doing. Get to see cool helicopters and how they are made.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known about the move to Trumbull ahead of time and that the recruiter was more communicative. I also wish that everything was ready for interns when we got there.

Advice

As much as I hate to say it, getting a job most places is all about connections. If you have a connection, you can more or less guarantee yourself a job. That being the case, make sure to make a good impression while working anywhere as an intern. You're there only for a short period of time, so put in 110% effort to impress your manager and senior engineers. People like working with people they can depend on, so be that person.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Manassas, VA

What I liked

I got to work side by side with full time engineers on a team that is designing a new product for the company. Tasks that we could take on were really flexible but still added actual value to the team. There was an intern program with lots of informational sessions, both technical and career driven

What I wish was different

During the summer that I interned with LM, a lot of the design was already laid out from years of testing and development and I didn’t get to fully experience that process

Advice

When you do an internship, it’s hard to get work you enjoy if you never express what you’re interested in. Often times, employees are really supportive in giving you the best experience as long as you ask!

Research Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Littleton, CO

What I liked

Very interesting work (company-wide), lots of extracirricular events for interns, well-defined intern program, opportunities for mentorship, shadowing, etc., and crazy smart coworkers. Somewhat flexible scheduling, with every other Friday off (although this means longer days the rest of the week). Also, you're working on things that could fly in space.

What I wish was different

I split time between two different sections, and they had never done that before so there was some overloading of my backlog. One of my two "handlers" (not managers, just people I was partnered with) was very difficult to work with and didn't seem to care about my development, but rather what they could get out of me for the summer. Your mileage may vary, as most of the other leaders I spoke with were great.

Advice

LM is a giant organization that does primarily contract work for the government, and with that comes a certain set of expectations. You'll have plenty of computer-based training on things that might not apply to you. Projects take time, finding the right resource can be difficult, and leadership is hit or miss with their support of your development. However, you are working for a company that is integral to space exploration, so you should never feel like your work doesn't matter.

What I wish was different

I wish that housing was cheaper and that I had a car.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

August 2019 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I appreciate the practical experience I’ve obtained from this internship! I also like the fact that they work with me as a student as well.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I enjoy it as it is

Advice

My advise is to prioritize school. Internships are important, but our main focus is getting our degrees so that internship may turn into an offer!
