Systems Engineering & Integration Intern

June - August 2018 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

Hello! My name is Nathan DeVera, and I am a Senior from Las Vegas, NV double majoring in Mechanical Engineering & Mathematics while simultaneously pursuing a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. This past summer, I worked in Silicon Valley for Lockheed Martin, the world's largest aerospace and defense company. In this internship, I served as a Systems Engineering & Integration intern where I worked on the Navy Fleet Ballistic Missile Program, a federal project that is currently funded through 2084. I was exposed to an incredible industry with an incredible mission. One of my tasks was to collaborate with a wide variety of different stakeholders (from Propulsion Engineers to Business Managers) to assess the life-cycle of the different missile components with the ultimate goal of creating a comprehensive Age Management Program to maximize the production efficiency and minimize cost. I had the opportunity to present my work to my supervisors, team members, Vice Presidents of Lockheed Martin, and even representatives of the U.S. Navy. I have accepted a full-time offer to return working for Lockheed Martin's Space Systems where I will continue serving the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program. A major life goal of mine is accomplished: I can finally tell people that I am a rocket scientist!

What I wish was different

Lockheed is such a big company that at times it was tough to stand out as more than just another intern. That being said, being assertive and (respectfully) loud served me well in getting to know people and being a force in the workplace.

Advice

I would highly recommend that wherever you are (career fair, in your internship, at school), meet as many people as possible. If I learned anything in this Summer internship, it was that you never know who you will meet and how they can affect your future. Connections are everything! Once you establish a personal relationship with people, they will remember and will go the extra mile to help you.

Student Tech Intern

May - August 2017 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I was given great work and learned in a great environment around other interns and younger employees. The upper level employees and managers were incredible mentors and taught me what it's like to manage employees, perform sound engineering practices in the workplace and deal with co-workers in tough situations.

What I wish was different

Everything was great but I wished it would be in a different location. My hometown is Orlando (which was great at the time) but I want to start my career somewhere else.

Advice

Work harder than everyone around you and they will want to hire you at the end of the internship. If not that, showing you are interested and getting along with everyone around you and creating relationships is key as well.

Autonomous Systems Intern

June - August 2017 • Littleton, CO

What I liked

Awesome projects for machine learning, computer vision, and robotics. Lots of super smart people, and an excellent place to grow. Especially if you are interested in research and development.

What I wish was different

Pretty ideal internship. Supervisors are very flexible and will help adjust the project to meet your interests halfway if it complies with the objective of the facility.

Advice

Know algorithms related to robotics, image processing, computer vision, or machine learning. It doesn't matter where (they will help place you), but you will be working on actual projects here. Things like neural nets, reinforcement learning, etc are there for you to work on if you're interested, but they're also tough areas to pick up in a couple of months.
