What I liked

Everyone was super helpful and I was doing important work on my project

What I wish was different

Because of COVID it was online only, I wish it was in person

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, I was confused about 90% of the time!

Talent Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

Lockheed was able to create a strong virtual internship program in such little time. I was very impressed by the virtual events they hosted biweekly for the interns so that all 500 of us could learn more about what each business unit at the company does. Also, my team was always supportive and gave me impactful projects to work on.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to work in person, but I appreciate Lockheed valuing our safety and switching most of the interns to a virtual platform.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! At first, I felt a bit intimidated by some of the employees on the leadership team. However, I realized that they like to help and appreciate when someone asks, especially an intern who is still learning.

Systems Intergration Intern

April - August 2020 • Cape Canaveral, FL

What I liked

Spent Summer working on One of LM's Space systems in a manufacturing capability. Loved spending time working on real engineering problems instead of general intern busy work. My work was important and highly appreciated.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately due to Covid-19 there were alot of restriction when it came to work. While i was able to work onsite 100% of the time the majority of the team did not so i was unable to meet face to face and generate personal connections with alot of the seniority on the project

Advice

I received the internship by cold calling the director of one of the programs and connecting with him because he was an alumni of UNO. When spending time working I took more and more responsibilities and work onto myself indebting myself to the team. when time came to negotiate a permanent position I was able to skip two levels and start in a leadership position. My Advice which has worked well for me is to be aggressive. A lot of people will tell you to know your worth and i think that is the wrong mentality. You decide what you are worth so you might as well make yourself priceless. Fight for what you want and take chances. Fight for more money always.

Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

The team I worked on did a good job of inviting myself and the other interns to meetings and one-on-ones to talk about what they do.

What I wish was different

Working from home was less ideal than if I had been able to work on-site, but I understand the reason for remote work.

Advice

Talk to everyone you can! Even working from home, you can make connections with a wide variety of people in different departments outside of just your team.

Subcontract Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

Despite being an online internship, Lockheed was extremely prepared to provide me with as many opportunities as they could while I was working with them. They gave me countless opportunities to explore my own interests as well as follow some guided projects.

What I wish was different

No question the internship would have been enhanced if it was in person, but other than that I would not have changed anything.

Advice

One piece of advice would be to really work hard to network while on campus and over different platforms to get your name out there. The more people you know the more likely you are to find someone who can get you on board. In addition, don't let the networking stop there. It is still important to be relevant at your company once you start so you have support by your co-workers and you can learn more about other opportunities within the company a well.

Aerospace Engineering Intern

January - May 2020 • Littleton, CO

What I liked

I loved how all of the employees at Lockheed Martin were so kind and helpful. The work environment there is so supportive and friendly.

What I wish was different

I unfortunately had my time with Lockheed Martin cut short due to the covid pandemic. It made the last few months of my internship difficult to complete effectively.

Advice

I would advise others to reach out to the people around them and make as many friends and contacts as possible. It is beneficial to do this to get as wide of an experience in a short time as possible.

Finance Intern

May - August 2020 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

It was an incredible experience overall. I knew it was going to be difficult for the company to take on interns during this COVID crisis. That being said, they were super professional from start to finish and I felt heavily involved all the time. They did an amazing job utilizing skype and zoom to show me what they were working on, why it mattered to the company, and how to use specific applications to do so. I even made some lasting relationships along the way.

What I wish was different

I wasn't allowed to go into the office due to Covid. All Lockheed Martin employees were required to stay home and log in from your home. I wish I had the opportunity to go into the office because I feel like I could have made more connections and it would have been easier to learn.

Advice

You shouldn't be nervous about your internship. The most important thing I learned is that everyone you're working with, even your boss, doesn't expect you to learn everything in one day. It simply takes time and 3 months inst enough over the summer. Also, take on as many projects as you can. If executed correctly you can gain the trust of your coworkers and boss and hopefully will get a chance to come back or maybe even a full-time offer after school. Lastly, don't just sit there and collect a paycheck, try to learn as much as possible, even you don't end up working for that company you can still take the things you learned and apply them elsewhere.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May 2021 • Stratford, CT

What I liked

The team was really awesome and they liked helping me and getting to know me. There's also an intern design competition that gives you a chance to meet with other interns and work on an interdisciplinary team.

What I wish was different

I worked remote so I didn't get as full of an experience as I probably would have in person.

Advice

Feel free to ask for more work if you're finishing your tasks quickly. It looks good and you're more likely to get a return offer.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you want something, ask around. People are happy to help you out, especially if you're an intern. And ask questions!!!

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2021 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to learn new skills and the software that employees use on a daily basis. Additionally, I enjoyed work on the cross functional intern project. It allowed us to interact with people that we did not interact with on a regular basis.

What I wish was different

My internship was remote and while I did learn a lot, there is so much more that could be learnt in person in an office environment.

Advice

Definitely use the opportunity to expand your network and write down all of the projects you worked on during your time there.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Camden, AR

What I liked

The welcoming atmosphere of Lockheed Martin Camden Operations made me feel more comfortable in my transition from college to a real-world setting of what being a mechanical engineer entails. All of my coworkers and managers were very helpful and encouraging but also gave me constructive criticism so that grow and progress in my career field.

What I wish was different

I really enjoyed my experience. I wish we could have been able to visit the sister location in Texas to see how the other side of things operated but due to covid restrictions, we were unable to do so.

Advice

Do not be afraid to find your own projects. Anyone can wait for an assignment to be handed to them, but if you are actively searching for projects or things to improve within the process and are successfully doing so then that will set you apart from the rest.

Student Sr Tech

May - October 2021 • Owego, NY

What I liked

The best part of the internship, besides the vast amount of information learned, was the company's culture. My department was very welcoming and was constantly checking in to make sure I was on the straight and narrow. I would highly recommend working for this company based on the work atmosphere and culture alone.

What I wish was different

If I could do the internship again I wish there could have been more in person interaction with other interns and employees. I think because of Covid-19 there were limited interactions and networking opportunity.

Advice

Go in open minded and take on anything and everything given to you or is a potential project. Doing so ensures you learn, shows your eagerness to work and a valuable adaptable asset, sometimes it also gives a reminded to your employer that you are just as capable as those working alongside you.
