Lockheed Martin

Software Engineer Intern

March - August 2018 • Owego, NY

What I liked

Access to advanced technologies, specialists, and resources.

What I wish was different

Due to the size of the company, I ended up working on a fully remote team, this made it difficult to communicate and be productive as a new hire intern.

Advice

Lockheed Martin is so large, that each experience is going to be different, so don't come in with any preset expectations.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

They really worked around my schedule. The work I did was meaningful and used by the company.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, my family took two vacations this summer so I was away from my internship for about 3 weeks. This was over two separate times, so I never got any large projects because I was unable to be there for the entirety of the projects.

Advice

Make friends with your coworkers. Getting along with those around you, whether they’re also college aged or almost retirement age, makes the entire experience a lot more enjoyable.

Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Owego, NY

What I liked

The people were very nice and they made sure I had things to work on.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a Chick-fil-A near by, but sounds like they might be getting one soon in Vestal, NY.

Advice

Make sure you ask for things to work on and ask questions when you are stuck. People are very busy and it's easy for them to miss emails and forget that you are bored. They are so helpful, but you have to be proactive and ask.

June - August 2018 • Stratford, CT

What I liked

The team, the area, learning more about supply chain, everything! I loved learning more about the company and more about the program I was working on.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a heavier work load at times, but with how little training I had it wasn't very possible.

Advice

I was open minded going into a state I had never been before not knowing anyone and it ended up being one of the best summers I could've asked for, so remember to always be open minded!

What I liked

Very organized and structured work environment. Work and responsibilities were very flexible.

What I wish was different

Company structure of the internship too rigid. Wish that internship presentation or ratings by unaffiliated employees outside of my work team were unnecessary and distracting.

enterprise operations intern

May - August 2019 • King of Prussia, PA

What I liked

I told my manager I was interested in project management and he basically had me shadow a project with a really strong PM. It helped me realize the in depth questions that PM’s have to answer to help plan. I also helped them with other management aspects, made presentations, and helped the team integrate new tools.

What I wish was different

It was slow at times. I probably should have asked for work, but I thought they would just give it to me. It was an office setting, so I was sitting at a desk for 9 hours a day (yes 9, they have a different scheduling system, which I liked actually).

Advice

People always say “ask questions, we’re here to help”. It can be hard to come up with questions but at the least, ask them how they got where they are today. It can help you find your path, or at least ease your mind that paths aren’t always direct, they curve. On another note, I’d say to take advantage of the benefits and find out as much as you can about tuition reimbursement, leadership programs, and other things that could benefit you for the future.
